Many years ago, I read an article from the late Dr. Lester Sumrall, one of the great Apostles of faith, and this question was asked of him: “Dr. Sumrall, how do you maintain the energy to do all that you do?” And in Dr. Sumrall style he gruffly answered, “I am intensely interested in what I do!”
When I read Dr. Sumrall’s response to that question, it lit a fire in me to have the zeal of God consume me like it did him. While I am still on that journey and continue to make spiritual progress in that area, I was prompted to hear from God on how to live this lifestyle of continuous energy. I want to share some of those insights with you.
#1. Live a Life of Praise & Worship
Praise is not something we do, it is who we are. We are praisers and worshippers. Many people use the excuse that it is not their “personality” to be a praiser and worshipper but the Scripture says otherwise.
Psalm 33:1 says, “Rejoice in the Lord you upright - it is fitting for the virtuous to be joyful.”
A lifestyle of praise and worship fits us. Allow all that is in you, by way of the new birth, to be released through your praise and worship. Let His praise be continually in your mouth and you will be strengthened by expressing your thankfulness.
#2. Pray In the Spirit Continuously
But you beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith - make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher - praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 1:20 (AMPC)
This is the true refreshing.
I have found that when I am getting weary in my mind and in my body, that it is not always physical rest that I need, but spiritual refreshing.
Praying in the Spirit is like jumping into a cool swimming pool on a scorching hot summer day. It is the true refreshing that we all need continuously.
#3. Practice His Presence
One of my greatest challenges is to focus on accomplishment instead of activity. Busyness is one of our greatest enemies because it prevents us from slowing down, being still, and enjoying God's presence.
The hills melt like wax at the presence of the Lord. Psalm 97:5 (KJV)
Everything we will ever need and every question we will ever have can only be found in His presence. This is why the enemy works so hard to keep us distracted. He doesn’t want us to get the answers we need and to experience the perfect peace that belongs to us, so we get caught in his trap of busyness and frantic living.
In returning to Me and resting in Me, you shall be saved; in quietness and in trusting confidence shall be your strength. Isaiah 30:15 (AMPC)
#4. Giving: Time, Talent & Tithe
Giving in all of these areas keeps our hearts tender toward the things of God and the people of God. It also keeps the blessings flowing as we give ourselves to obedience.
The entire Kingdom of God is based upon this one principle found in Genesis 8:22.
“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.”
I love the Phillips Translation of Galatians 6:9, “A man’s harvest in life depends entirely upon what he sows.” That about sums it all up right there!
#5. Maintain A Servant’s Heart
This is one of my life’s key scriptures.
Never lag in zeal and in earnest endeavor; be aglow and burning with the Spirit, serving the Lord. Romans 12:11 (AMPC)
There is a huge difference between serving and working. If we just work, we are just focused on a task, but if we serve, it comes from the heart and is done for the Lord.
This is carried over into every area of our lives - not just what we do at our local church. This should be how we live at home, perform on the job, and in reaching the lost. Let it all be done from the heart and done as unto the Lord because it is from Him that we receive our real reward. (Colossians 3:23 AMP)
#6. Walk In Love
I hear so many people say how hard it is to walk in love and it is - if you are looking for more love to walk in. I think Romans 5:5 is the key. “...for God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
Stop looking for more love and start working out the love that has already been poured out in your heart by the Holy Spirit! Our love walk is also the key to our faith working.
Galatians 5:6 tells us that our “faith works by love.”
The enemy just loves it when we get caught up in offense, strife, envy and unforgiveness because it drains all the physical and spiritual strength right out of us. Stay in the love of God - be at peace - enjoy His love and live in it.
These are just a few of the spiritual disciplines that the Lord has emphasized in my life over the years. They are tried and true!
Begin embracing these truths in your life on a daily basis and I know the zeal of God will consume you and you will live life continuously fired up!
