What I Wish I Knew Before I Got Married

What I Wish I Knew Before I Got Married

This month, Jonathan and I celebrated 42 years of marriage. What an adventurous journey this has been. There have been a lot of ups and downs, great times, and tough times, but the faithfulness of God, His Word and our love for each other have been the glue that has held us together. I wouldn’t want to be adventuring with anyone else but my first and only love.

I met Jonathan when I was 16 on a missions trip to Mexico. That is a story in itself that I will save for another time. As much as I loved him, being in love is not enough to build a good foundation for marriage. Being in love and being prepared is the best way to start.

Preparation helps you navigate the pressures of life and there are a lot of pressures in marriage and in ministry.

In our circles, over 40 years ago, no one was talking about preparing for marriage…

Choose Bitter or Better; It's Up To You

Choose Bitter or Better; It's Up To You

When I was young in marriage and in ministry, over forty years ago, my father gave me the greatest advice I have ever received.

It was during a time of great turmoil and upheaval and I felt betrayed and forgotten. In great distress, I unloaded all my pain to my father. He never interrupted me. He just looked at me and listened. When I finally finished, he said to me…

Fight For Your Family

Fight For Your Family

It is obvious that the attack of the enemy in the 21st century is on the home. The values that we cherish and the godly principles that we have dedicated ourselves to are worth fighting for.

If we want to win our families to God, it all starts by standing up and fighting for them! Drawing the line in the sand saying, “No more devil! Enough is enough!”

Think about this for a moment.

  • Do you want to be right or reconciled?

  • Do you want to continue being hurt or do you want to be healed?

  • Do you want to keep being the victim or start becoming whole?

If you’ll fight for your family God will fight for you.
If you’ll fight for your freedom God will fight for you.

Below is a passionate message that I recently shared with our congregation on this subject.

Verna and I are standing together with you for your freedom and for victory for your family.

You Get What You Ask For

You Get What You Ask For

God can make things happen that you could never make happen. He’s already in your tomorrow making it ready for you, but are you asking big?

He’s already lined up the right people, the breaks you need, and doors to open that you could never have opened on your own. My question is, are you asking BIG or are you letting your circumstances—how you were raised or what somebody said—talk you out of it?

Don't Be The Monkey

Don't Be The Monkey

If I had a dollar for every time that I have either been offended or tempted to be offended I would have a very nice ocean front vacation home on Cape Cod. The Bible tells us that offenses will come, so it’s not a matter of if they will come, but rather when they will come. So it behoves us to understand how offenses come and what to do with them when they do.

Below is an audio recording of some thoughts I shared on this subject at our recent Lead Roundtable.

If there is anything Verna and I can ever do for you please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Blessings!

6 Keys To Living Fired Up!

6 Keys To Living Fired Up!

Many years ago, I read an article from the late Dr. Lester Sumrall, one of the great Apostles of faith, and this question was asked of him: “Dr. Sumrall, how do you maintain the energy to do all that you do?” And in Dr. Sumrall style he gruffly answered, “I am intensely interested in what I do!”

When I read Dr. Sumrall’s response to that question, it lit a fire in me to have the zeal of God consume me like it did him.  While I am still on that journey and continue to make spiritual progress in that area, I was prompted to hear from God on how to live this lifestyle of continuous energy. I want to share some of those insights with you.

It's Just A Season

It's Just A Season

To every thing there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV)

If you live in New England, you know there are four major topics around every dinner table.  They are religion, politics, sports and, of course, the unpredictable weather.

We are in an unpredictable weather pattern now that has many people whining, complaining, and threatening to move any place there is sunshine. I may have joined that conversation myself a time or two but we won’t talk about that.

I’m not so thrilled about snow in April and 20 degree weather. I was ready to open the pool and plant flowers weeks ago, however, it’s just a season.

Seasons come and seasons go. No season lasts forever, unless of course, you choose for it to last forever.

Have you ever felt stuck in a season of life? Here are three ways to thrive when you are in a season that doesn’t seem to want to end.

Are You Influencing Your World?

Are You Influencing Your World?

I recently became aware of statistics which reflect that shortly after someone makes a decision to follow Christ, contact with people outside their Christian circle decreases dramatically. This trend continues to spiral down year after year until followers of Christ become almost completely isolated from the world around them, and people who are lost...

The Power of the Palm Tree

The Power of the Palm Tree

We are currently on vacation in sunny Florida and we seemed to have missed two sizable snowstorms. We heard from our family, and yesterday’s storm alone left 31” of snow. That’s a lot of snow even for this die-hard New Englander.

While my family and church are digging out, I’m surrounded by gorgeous palm trees. I relax as soon as I see them. We have lots of beautiful trees all over New England, but no palm trees anywhere to be found.

The Bible has a lot to say about palm trees and that we should be like them. But why? Psalm 92:12 (NIRV) tells us that good people shall flourish and prosper like a palm tree.

It's All About Perspective

It's All About Perspective

It's easy to focus on what's wrong in your life. What you don't have, how far you have to go, and how big your obstacles are. If you are not careful, you will lose sight of all the good things God has done for you.

It's all about keeping things in perspective.

Business maybe slow, but it's the wrong perspective to think, "I'll never make it."  The right perspective is to think, "God is supplying all of my needs."

If you're going through a disappointment, the wrong perspective is, "I should have known this would happen. I never get any good breaks." The right perspective is to believe that when one door closes, God will open a better one.

You can put two people in the exact same circumstances and the one will be complaining, negative, and just enduring life, or the other will be happy, grateful, and enjoying life.

What's the difference? Perspective. It's all about how one chooses to see the situation.

We all have challenges that can steal our joy and cause us to be sour. But if we are to live a fulfilled life, we need the foundation of a grateful spirit.

I've learned that seeds of discouragement cannot take root in a grateful heart. If you are unhappy today and you've lost your enthusiasm, the quickest way to turn that around is to be more grateful.
